Rosco TV Black Paint — Ultra Low Reflectance Studio Black (3% Reflectance)
Rosco TV Black is a specialised studio paint designed for film, television and stage environments where unwanted light reflections must be minimised. Its defining characteristic is an extremely low 3% reflectance, allowing the surface to absorb light rather than reflect it.
Why professionals use it: many “black” paints still reflect a surprising amount of light under stage lighting or projection. Rosco TV Black is formulated to absorb light and reduce reflections, creating deeper blacks and improving contrast in controlled lighting environments.
Why 3% reflectance matters
In professional lighting environments, even small reflections can be noticeable on camera or during projection. TV Black’s extremely low reflectance allows it to absorb the majority of incident light.
- Reduces glare from stage lighting
- Improves projection contrast in dark environments
- Prevents light spill from reflecting off surfaces
- Maintains deep black appearance under bright lighting
Where Rosco TV Black is used
- Film and television studios
- Projection environments
- Lighting control areas
- Stage masking and backstage walls
- Black box theatres
- Set construction where light absorption is required
Why choose TV Black over ordinary black paint
Standard architectural black paints are typically designed for colour appearance rather than light control. Under stage lighting they often produce reflections or sheen that can interfere with cameras and projection.
- Lower reflectance: engineered for approximately 3% reflectance rather than decorative colour standards
- Ultra-matte finish: minimises specular reflections from lighting fixtures
- Designed for studio environments: optimised for lighting control rather than interior decoration
- Consistent finish: performs reliably across large surfaces such as walls, ceilings and masking areas
This is why TV Black is commonly specified in professional studio builds, projection spaces and theatrical environments instead of standard black wall paint.
▼ Application guide
- Ensure the surface is clean, dry and free of dust or grease.
- Prime porous surfaces before painting.
- Stir paint thoroughly before use.
- Apply using brush, roller or spray.
- Use thin even coats and maintain a wet edge.
For best results on new or porous surfaces, Rosco recommends priming with Rosco Tough Prime before applying TV Black.
Always test a small section first to confirm the finish and reflectance behaviour under your lighting conditions.
