Paint Coverage Calculator

Work out how much Rosco paint a job needs, in gallons and in tins, using the coverage figures Rosco publishes. Built for cycs, keying walls, stage floors and scenic builds.

  • 18 Rosco products
  • Published figures only
  • Cove arc built in
  • Shows the working

The calculator

Measure the surfaces, pick the product, get the tins

Add each surface separately. A cyc wall, its floor return and a backing flat are three entries, and everything totals into one order.

01 Measure a surface

Choose the shape, enter the dimensions in metres, then add it to the job.

02 Surfaces on this job

Loaded with a worked studio example so you can see the method before changing anything.

Surface Area

03 Product and coats

Coverage is taken from the figure published on each product page. Where Rosco publishes a range, the estimate is a range.

The working

Every figure the estimate is built from, so you or your client can check it.

The method

Three things most paint calculators get wrong

A square footage calculator gives you area. Buying paint needs area, coats and a real coverage rate, and a cyc needs one more step again.

01 · The cove arc

A coved corner is longer than it looks

You do not measure straight across the corner. The developed length of a quarter-circle cove is its radius multiplied by 1.57. Wall height above the cove, plus that arc, plus the floor return gives the height you actually paint. This is the figure most often got wrong on a cyc.

height = wall + (radius × 1.57) + return

02 · Coats and coverage

Area is only the first step

Coverage is published per coat. Two coats over a primed wall needs twice the paint, and a porous or bare surface can need a third. The calculator multiplies by coats before it divides by coverage, and adds an allowance for touch-ups and test panels.

gallons = area × coats ÷ coverage ÷ 3.79

03 · Ranges stay ranges

One number would be a guess

Rosco publishes a single coverage figure for some products and a range for others. Chroma Key, Fluorescent and Metallix are published at 200 to 300 square feet per gallon, a spread of about one and a half times. We show both ends and order to the higher figure, because ordering short costs a day.

200 to 300 sq ft/gal = 19 to 28 m² per 3.79 L

Notes on the figures

Where every number comes from

Nothing here is estimated from a figure Rosco has not published.

Gallons and litres
Rosco publishes coverage per US gallon, so the headline figure is gallons. One gallon is taken as 3.79 L, the same basis the coverage figures use, and tins are listed by the size printed on them.
Why a range, not a single number
Rosco publishes a single coverage figure for some products and a range for others. On a 107 m² studio in two coats, the published Chroma Key range is the difference between roughly 7.6 and 11.2 gallons. We lead with the conservative end.
The cove arc
A quarter-circle cove has a developed length of radius multiplied by 1.57. Measured straight across the corner instead, a 1.2 m cove comes up about 0.7 m short per metre of screen width.
No prices on this page
Quantities only. Prices change, and a price copied onto a page goes stale without anyone noticing. Follow any product link for current pricing and stock.
Pack sizes
Tins are chosen for the least paint left over, without splitting an order into a handful of small tins where one pail does the job.
Supersaturated is a concentrate
Its published coverage of 8 to 10 m² per litre assumes dilution at 1:1. The quantity shown is concentrate, before water. Thinning past 5:1 can weaken the binder.

Estimate only. Real coverage moves with substrate porosity, surface texture, dilution and whether the paint is brushed, rolled or sprayed. A porous or bare surface can need an extra coat. Always test your own surface before committing to a full order. CrystalGel publishes no coverage figure, only that it varies with build thickness, so it is not in the list.
