Five steps to a screen that keys clean
First — green or blue screen?
Cameras are most sensitive to green, so it keys with the least light and the least noise — it's the default for almost every shoot. Reach for blue when your foreground has green in it (foliage, green wardrobe) or for certain hair and skin.
The problems a clean key has to beat
Hardware-store paint looks green to the eye, then falls apart the moment you pull a key. Here's what actually goes wrong — and how Rosco's single-pigment, dead-matte paint fixes each one.
✗ DIY green looks fine on set, then keys ragged and noisy in post.
Fix: a single saturated green pigment stays even when the compositor pushes the key — not a blue-plus-yellow tint of a white base.
✗ Hot spots and shine on the screen ruin the key.
Fix: a dead-matte finish doesn't bounce specular highlights back into the lens.
✗ Green spill is wrapping your talent's edges.
Fix: higher saturation means less light on the screen, so less spill — separation and flat lighting do the rest.
