Turnaround Times

Turnaround times vary depending on a range of factors, including artwork approval, design complexity, material type, and the quantity required. Larger orders or more intricate artwork may require additional production time.

Both glass and stainless-steel gobos follow different manufacturing processes, so the timeframe will depend on your specific requirements and where your order sits in the current production cycle.

Four steps from fixture to finished gobo

Note the outside diameter and image area. The outside diameter is the physical size of the gobo blank; the max image area is the largest artwork that projects cleanly.
Choose steel or glass. Steel for simple breakups and patterns; glass for logos, gradients, fine detail and full-colour artwork.

Send artwork that projects sharply

To achieve the sharpest projection, vector artwork is best. If you only have a basic logo or an unusual file type, just send it through — we'll review it and advise the best way to proceed.

Preferred (vector): AI, EPS, PDF.
Also accepted: PSD, TIFF, PNG, JPG — high-resolution only, suitable for full-colour or photographic gobos.

Metal gobos: min 150 dpi, 700 × 700 px or larger
Glass gobos: min 300 dpi for clean, sharp projection
Vector files: no resolution limits — scale cleanly at any size

A quick tip

Higher-quality artwork always produces a sharper projection. Bold shapes and clean lines read best; very fine hairlines can drop out at small sizes, especially in steel.

Case study · Metz Cathedral, France — 800th anniversary

Custom glass gobos guide a spiritual journey through a cathedral

For the 800th anniversary of Metz Cathedral, lighting designers Quartiers Lumières and graphic studio Nouvelle Étiquette used Rosco Image Spots with custom glass gobos to project poetic text — in a bespoke medieval-inspired typeface — across the walls, floors and columns. Each projection was sized to sit precisely within the architecture and programmed to fade slowly in and out, inviting visitors to look up and notice a detail they'd otherwise miss. It's a clear demonstration of why image area matters: the artwork was cut to land exactly where it needed to.

Case study · Varberg, Sweden — "The Enchanted City" festival

Custom gobos turn building façades into a festival of light

For the Rys och Mys ("Thrill and Chill") festival, lighting designer Johan Röklander of TRS Consulting used Rosco Image Spot HO projectors to throw stars, spiderwebs, hearts and children's own artwork across the façades of Varberg's buildings and fortress. Custom glass gobos carried the artwork; the higher-output fixtures let the team project from greater distances and onto more difficult, textured brick surfaces while keeping the colour saturated and the images crisp.

How do I find the right gobo size for my fixture?

Find your fixture in the tables above and read off the outside diameter (the physical blank size) and the max image area (the largest artwork that projects cleanly). If your model isn't listed, send us the make and model — or a photo of the gobo holder — and we'll confirm the size.

Steel or glass — which should I order?

Use steel for breakups, textures, patterns and simple single-colour logos. Use glass for multi-colour logos, gradients, photographic detail and fine artwork that steel can't hold together. Both come in the same range of sizes.

My exact fixture isn't in the chart. Can you still help?

Yes. This guide covers the most common fixtures in Australia & New Zealand, but CFATS can manufacture a Rosco custom gobo to almost any diameter, in steel or glass, for nearly any holder or wheel. Just tell us the make and model, or send a photo of the holder or an existing gobo.

What artwork should I supply?

Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF) are best and scale cleanly. We also accept high-resolution PSD, TIFF, PNG or JPG for full-colour or photographic glass gobos — 300 dpi for glass, 150 dpi (700 × 700 px or larger) for metal.
