How it works
Ordinary in white light, electric under UV
Fluorescent pigments absorb UV and re-emit it as visible light, so the colour looks far brighter under a UV365 blacklight than under work light. The paint is deliberately thin and translucent — that's a feature: you build opacity and brightness by layering, without losing the luminous glow. You don't always need UV to get vivid neon-like colour, but a blacklight makes it sing.

How scenic artists apply it
Layer, pounce and paint both sides
For neon, apply in multiple thin layers and concentrate colour on the tube edges to fake the 3D glow, then bleed colour onto the surrounding surface for the halo. For day-to-night muslin, size the fabric with starch, pounce your design, and paint the front and back differently — a barrier layer plus bright washes on the back reveal under UV. Always test translucency on a sample under your actual lighting.
