Rosco Fluorescent UV Paint — Invisible Blue (5785)

What it does

Invisible by day, glowing under UV

Invisible Blue is the ‘hidden’ colour in the Rosco Fluorescent range. Over a light surface it all but disappears in normal light, then shows up as a pale blue glow when the UV comes on — the classic way to paint reveals, hidden messages and secret details. Over dark or black colours it can be seen in normal light, so plan your ground colour and test first.

  • Dries milky white — hard to see over light colours
  • Glows pale blue under UV (black light)
  • Water-based vinyl acrylic binder (same as Off Broadway)
  • Flat / matte finish
  • Visible over dark or black grounds — plan your base
  • Soap and water clean-up

Film & music video

In-camera reveals on light-coloured sets lit with black light.

Events & activations

Hidden branding or artwork that switches on under UV.

Right job, wrong job

What it is — and what it isn’t

Use it for

  • Hidden detail over white or light-coloured surfaces
  • Reveals cued with UV lighting
  • Primed scenery, props and flats
  • Escape-room and attraction clues

Don’t use it for

  • Hiding detail over dark or black grounds — it can be seen there in normal light
  • Long-term exterior or sunlit use — fluorescent pigments fade with prolonged UV exposure
  • Heavy dilution — water reduces hide and can reduce glow
  • Expecting a glow with no UV source — it fluoresces, it does not glow in the dark
How to use

Getting the best result

  1. Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of dirt and grease. Prime porous surfaces with Rosco Tough Prime — Tough Prime White is our recommended primer for canvas and muslin.
  2. For the best ‘invisible’ effect, paint over a white or light-coloured ground.
  3. Stir well (don’t shake). Use straight from the can — add water only if needed, as it reduces glow.
  4. Apply thin, even coats by brush, roller or spray gun, keeping a wet edge.
  5. Allow 30–45 minutes to touch-dry and 1–2 hours before recoating (at 24°C).
  6. Check under both your normal working light and your UV source before the show. Clean tools with soap and water.

FAQs

Common questions

Is Invisible Blue 5785 really invisible?

Over white or light-coloured surfaces it is difficult to see in normal light, because it dries a milky white. Over dark or black colours it is visible. Under UV (black light) it glows pale blue. Test on your actual surface and lighting first.

Do Rosco Fluorescent paints glow in the dark?

No. They fluoresce — they glow while lit by an ultraviolet (black light) source and stop when the UV is switched off. They are not phosphorescent glow-in-the-dark paints.

Do I need a primer or base coat?

Prime porous surfaces with Rosco Tough Prime (Tough Prime White is our recommended primer for canvas and muslin). Rosco recommends a white base coat for the most dramatic colour effects.

Can I thin it with water?

You can, but Rosco notes that water reduces hiding power and may reduce the brightness of the glow. Use it straight from the can where possible.

Will it fade?

Fluorescent pigments degrade with prolonged UV exposure, so avoid direct sunlight and long-term exterior use.

Always read the label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) before use, and test on a sample of your actual surface first. Coverage is a guide only — it varies with the substrate and its porosity, the number of coats, any dilution and how the paint is applied. Information is from Rosco technical data and is a guide only.

🎨 UV / Fluorescent Paint Quick Guide

Rosco Fluorescent (UV reactive) paints are designed to look vivid under normal light and glow intensely under UV / blacklight. They’re used across theatre, haunted attractions, themed environments, dance and immersive installs where colour impact and UV reveals matter.

Finish: Flat / Matte Water-based Binder: Vinyl Acrylic High-impact UV glow

Why Rosco?

  • Built for professional scenic work: consistent results across large surfaces and multiple coats.
  • Stronger UV read: designed to “pop” under blacklight in entertainment environments.
  • Works as a system: integrates cleanly with Rosco primers and scenic paint workflows.
  • Trusted worldwide: widely specified for theatre, education, film/TV and themed builds.

Fast tips (avoid disappointment)

  • For maximum glow, apply over a bright white base coat.
  • Apply thin, uniform coats — the glow is more even and predictable.
  • UV output depends on fixture strength + distance — test early with your actual lights.

Dilution

Fluorescent Paints should be used straight out of the can. They can be diluted with water if necessary, however this will reduce the hiding power of the paint and may reduce the brightness of the “glow.”

Surface Preparation

Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from dirt and grease. Prime porous surfaces (except fabrics) using Rosco Tough Prime. If painting a new plaster surface, prime wall with a commercial primer/sealer designed for raw plaster, then use Rosco Tough Prime as a final preparation. Use a white base coat to achieve the most dramatic colour effects.

Application

Stir contents well before use. Apply by brush, roller, or spray gun. Apply in thin uniform coats, using a good quality brush or roller. Use overlapping strokes, keeping a wet edge.

Coverage

Approximately 300 sq. ft. per gallon (≈ 28 m² per 3.79L), depending on application method, substrate and thickness of application.

Average Dry Time

At 75°F (24°C): Dries to the touch in 30–45 minutes. Can be recoated in 1–2 hours.

Soap and water.

Cautions & important notes

  • UV longevity: Fluorescent pigments will degrade from prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light. Avoid direct sunlight where possible.

⭐ Popular: Invisible Blue (UV “Invisible Ink” Effect)

Many people searching for UV paint are specifically after an “invisible ink” style reveal. Invisible Blue is a milky white paint that fluoresces to a pale blue under blacklight. When painted over light coloured surfaces, Invisible Blue is often difficult to detect. However, it can be seen when painted over dark or black colours.

Tip: If your goal is maximum “invisible” in work light, test on your exact substrate and base coat before committing to the full build.
