Rosco CrystalGel (7400) — Clear Scenic Gel for Water, Ice & Glass (AU & NZ)
Rosco CrystalGel (7400) · clear scenic gel · AU & NZ
Water, ice and glass — straight from a jar.
Need a rippling pond, a sheet of ice, dripping water, cut glass or a wet, glistening surface — without a drop of real water? Rosco CrystalGel is a thick, clear-drying acrylic gel you brush, trowel and sculpt into transparent, three-dimensional effects that stay flexible and won't crack. It's the scenic artist's go-to for anything that needs to read as water, glass or ice on stage and on camera.

The effect you're chasing
When nothing but 'clear and dimensional' will do
CrystalGel solves the scenic problems that flat paint simply can't.
✗ You need a pond, puddle or dripping water — but real water is a nightmare on set.
Rosco fix: Build the water out of CrystalGel: trowel ripples, pull drips, let it dry clear and it reads as water, permanently and safely.
✗ The script calls for ice, frost or a frozen surface.
Rosco fix: Layer and texture CrystalGel into ice sheets, icicles and frost that catch the light like the real thing.
✗ You want cut glass, gems, crystals or a glossy wet look.
Rosco fix: Mould CrystalGel into transparent glass and gem effects, or glaze a surface for a permanent wet sheen.
✗ Ordinary clear coats crack the moment the scenery flexes or travels.
Rosco fix: CrystalGel dries flexible, so built-up textures survive handling, touring and moving scenery.
✗ You need the water or glass tinted — green pond, blue ice, amber glass.
Rosco fix: Mix in a little Rosco scenic paint to colour it while keeping it translucent.

What it is
A clear, flexible acrylic gel you can sculpt
CrystalGel is a heavy-bodied, water-based acrylic medium that goes on white or milky and dries to a clear, tough, flexible film. Because it holds its shape as you apply it, you can build genuine dimension — ripples, drips, mounds and texture — not just a flat glaze. Once cured it's transparent, durable and flexible enough to move with the scenery it's on.
- Heavy-bodied — holds peaks, ripples and drips as you sculpt
- Dries from milky to clear and glossy
- Flexible cured film that resists cracking and chipping
- Water-based — low odour, easy clean-up with water while wet
- Bonds to most primed scenic surfaces
How to use it
Brush it, trowel it, tint it, texture it
Apply CrystalGel with a brush, trowel, spatula or palette knife over a sealed, primed surface. Build it up in layers for depth, work the surface for ripples and movement, and let each layer dry clear before the next. Leave it clear for water and glass, or mix in a touch of Rosco scenic paint for coloured, translucent effects.
- Tools: brush, trowel, spatula or palette knife
- Build in thin-to-medium layers, letting each dry clear
- Work the wet surface for ripples, waves and drip detail
- Tint with Rosco Off Broadway or Super Saturated for coloured water/glass
- Seal porous surfaces first (FlexBond is ideal) for best adhesion
