Rosco CrystalGel is a water-based, non-toxic scenic coating that dries to a clear, flexible, durable finish. Use it as a clear protective coat, a primer to help paint stick to tricky foams & synthetics, or a texture medium for glossy, glass-like, wet or dimensional effects.

  • Clear & flexible: great where you don’t want a brittle shell
  • Primer for “hard-to-paint” surfaces: helps paint bond to foam & synthetics
  • Texture-friendly: brush, trowel, stipple, build-up effects
  • Multipurpose: coating + binder + adhesive-style applications (beads/aggregates)
  • Workshop-friendly: water clean-up while wet

Quick check: Choose CrystalGel when you want clear + flexible, when paint won’t stick to a surface, or when you’re building gloss/wet/texture effects.

Most common CrystalGel projects

  • Primer for foam & synthetics when paint won’t bond
  • Clear protective coat over scenic finishes (adds durability)
  • Wet / glossy / “glass-like” effects (water, slime, ice textures)
  • Binder for glitter, aggregates, fillers, and texture mixes
  • Fabric stiffening or structure without turning fabric opaque
  • Splinter shielding on rough wood (clear barrier coat)
  • Costumes/props where you need flexibility + a paintable surface
  • Detail work using pastry tube / trowel / tongue depressor for controlled build-up

Best for

  • Clear & flexible finish requirements
  • Priming foam + synthetics so paint adheres
  • Texture & special effects (gloss, wet, dimensional build)
  • Projects where a rigid coating could crack during handling/transport

If you need a hard shell or a flexible “skin” coating

CrystalGel is clear and versatile, but other Rosco coatings may be better depending on the job:

  • FoamCoat → rigid foam hard shell (XPS/EPS/polystyrene rocks/facades)
  • FlexCoat → flexible protective coating for soft props / touring builds
  • FlexBond → adhesive + coating for reinforcement and mixed-material builds

How much CrystalGel do I need?

Coverage varies by substrate and thickness. As a guide, CrystalGel covers approx. 23 m² per 3.79L (1 gallon) for a standard coat. Heavier texture builds reduce coverage.

Quick formula (ballpark):

Gallons needed ≈ (Area (m²) × Coats) ÷ Coverage (m² per gallon)

For texture work (trowel / heavy build), plan on fewer m² per gallon and round up.

Example surface area 1 coat 2 coats Notes
10 m² ~0.44 gal ~0.87 gal Round up if porous or textured
20 m² ~0.87 gal ~1.74 gal Common for multiple props/panels
40 m² ~1.74 gal ~3.48 gal Large scenic surfaces
60 m² ~2.61 gal ~5.22 gal Texture builds may need more

If you tell us your approximate m², substrate, and whether you’re doing a thin clear coat or heavy texture build, we can help you estimate more accurately.

CrystalGel vs FoamCoat vs FlexCoat vs FlexBond

Product Best for Key advantage When to choose it
CrystalGel Clear, flexible coating / primer / texture medium Clear + flexible; great adhesion to many tricky substrates Clear coats, wet/gloss effects, priming foam & synthetics
FoamCoat Rigid foam hardening (XPS/EPS/polystyrene) Hard, impact-resistant, paint-ready shell Rocks/facades/props needing a rigid protective shell
FlexCoat Flexible foam, soft props, touring builds Tough + flexible finish (helps reduce cracking) Anything that bends, compresses, or gets handled heavily
FlexBond Adhesion + reinforcement + sealing Adhesive + coating in one Layered builds, mixed materials, reinforcement, bonding

How to use CrystalGel (best-practice steps)
  1. Prep: Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, dust/grease-free.
  2. Stir: Mix thoroughly before use.
  3. Apply: Brush, roller, trowel, pastry tube, tongue depressor (or any convenient tool).
  4. Dry: Typically dries to touch in 1–8 hours depending on thickness.
  5. Cure: Allow 24 hours for complete cure before heavy handling or top-coating.
  6. Finish: Use as a clear coat, a primer under paint, or as a texture medium/mix binder.

Thinning: You can thin slightly with water for flow, but avoid heavy thinning (it can reduce binder strength).

Technical specifications (quick reference)
  • Colour/finish: Clear / translucent, typically slightly glossy (varies with thickness)
  • Dry time: 1–8 hours to touch (thickness dependent)
  • Full cure: 24 hours
  • Coverage: approx. 23 m² per 3.79L (1 gallon) for a standard coat (varies by method/substrate)
  • Clean-up: Soap & water while wet (once dry, clean-up is difficult)
  • Application tools: Brush, roller, pastry tube, trowel, tongue depressor, etc.
  • Shelf life: Minimum 12 months (sealed container, stored correctly)
  • Temperature: Avoid applying below 10°C; protect from freezing
CrystalGel FAQ

Is CrystalGel flexible when dry?
Yes — it’s designed to remain flexible compared to rigid hard-coat products.

Can I use it as a primer?
Yes — it’s often used where paint struggles to stick to foam/synthetics.

Can I tint it?
Yes — it can be mixed with compatible colorants/dyes for decorative details and effects.

When should I choose FoamCoat instead?
If you need a rigid, sandable hard shell for carved XPS/EPS builds.
