Rosco Fog & Haze Fluids — Which Fluid For Your Machine

Fog machinesFog & haze fluids

Rosco fog & haze fluids

The fluid is half the result.

The machine makes the effect possible; the fluid decides what it actually looks like — how dense, how long it hangs, and how cleanly it clears. Every Rosco fluid is water-based where it can be, on the USFDA GRAS list, and engineered to leave no oily residue. Here's how they differ and which suits your machine and your job.

First, the basics

Fog or haze?

Fog

Visible clouds you can see move

A dense, visible effect — billowing clouds or low-lying fog. It reveals airflow directly and reads on camera and to the eye. Made by the Vapour, Vapour Plus and Mini-V.

Haze

A fine, even atmosphere

An almost-invisible suspension that fills a space evenly and reveals light beams — not clouds. It hangs for a long time and holds a consistent atmosphere. Made by the V-Hazer.

How output is measured

By fluid used, not “volume”

Rosco rates machines by fluid consumption (litres/hour). The same output fills a small room densely and a big hall lightly — so match machine, fluid and space together.

Why water-based matters. Rosco fog fluids are low-molecular-weight glycols in de-ionised water, with components on the USFDA GRAS list used in food and cosmetics — no volatile petroleum, and no oily film left on people, sets or equipment. That's what makes them safe to use around performers, students and repeated training.

Choose your fog by how it behaves

These run in the Vapour, Vapour Plus and Mini-V. The choice is about hang time: a fog that lingers, one that clears fast, or one that fades into haze.

Fog · the workhorse

Rosco Fog Fluid (8200)

The Academy Award®-winning water-based standard — thick fog with a long hang time. Low-molecular-weight glycols in de-ionised water, on the USFDA GRAS list, with no oily residue. The default for dense, visible, long-lasting fog and for tracing airflow.

Stage & Studio Fog Fluid
Fog · fast-clearing

Stage & Studio Fog Fluid

The same components in a lighter configuration — a fast-dissipating fog developed for Hollywood soundstages and photographic studios. Ideal when you want an atmosphere that appears and clears quickly, or low-lying fog when paired with a chiller.

Rosco Light Fog Fluid
Fog → haze

Rosco Light Fog Fluid

A translucent fog that quickly thins into a haze — a bridge between fog and atmosphere. Good where you want a soft fill that settles into an even, light suspension rather than a solid cloud.

Rosco F/X Fog Fluid

A fog fluid tuned for fast, punchy effects that don't linger — useful for bursts and short-lived reveals where you don't want the space to stay full.

Haze fluids

Haze — fine, even, long-hanging

The V-Hazer runs its own dedicated fluid, by design. Other Rosco haze fluids suit specific haze generators — ask us to match one to your machine.

Rosco V-Hazer Fluid
Haze · for the V-Hazer only

Rosco V-Hazer Fluid

A water-based haze fluid modelled on Rosco's Academy Award®-winning formulation — maximum hang time and optimal particle size, with no oily residue on performers, sets or equipment. Engineered to be aerosolised by the V-Hazer; it runs no other fluid.

Rosco Delta Haze Fluid (8425)

A haze fluid for Rosco's other haze generators — a fine, long-hanging atmospheric haze for revealing light beams. Ask us which machine it suits.

Do not run non-V-Hazer fluids in the V-Hazer — its temperature, pressure and nozzle are engineered for V-Hazer Fluid, and other fluids may damage it and void the warranty. SDS for every fluid available on request.
