Rosco Blackwrap® / Photofoil / Cinefoil

Blackwrap, Photofoil and Cinefoil are the matte black foil used on set to control light. All three are the same idea under different brand names, and if someone on your crew asks for black foil or black wrap, this is what they mean.

The material is a flexible 0.002 inch aluminium substrate, form-holding, heat resistant and weather resistant, with a matte black coating on both sides. It is used for masking light leaks, killing unwanted reflections, and shaping a beam where a proper flag will not fit.

What it is used for

  • Improvised barn doors, snoots, flags and gobos on the fly.
  • Masking light spill from fixtures, practicals and equipment in shot.
  • Killing reflections off metal, glass and anything else bouncing light back at camera.
  • Wrapping around hot fixtures, which is where the heat resistance earns its place over ordinary black foil or tape.

It holds whatever shape you bend it into and stays there, which is the whole point. It can be positioned with tape, staples or adhesive, and it is light enough to rig without a stand.

Sizes

Available in a range of widths and roll lengths, so you can carry a small roll in a kit bag and keep a wide roll in the shop.
