Rosco E276 Blackout Filter
Rosco E276 Blackout is an opaque lighting control material designed to completely block light, create negative fill and produce shadow effects for film, television and photography productions.
Unlike improvised blackout materials, E276 Blackout is supplied as a professional lighting filter material that can be quickly cut, taped, framed or rigged wherever light control is required.
- Quickly removes unwanted daylight from windows
- Matte black finish absorbs ambient light
- Lightweight and easier to transport than boards or fabric solids
- Waterproof material suitable for wet environments
- Roll format allows quick trimming and setup
Common Uses
- Blacking out windows on location
- Creating negative fill for contrast
- Reducing ambient bounce from walls or floors
- Rigging as a lightweight flag on frames or stands
- Cutting custom cucoloris (cookie) shadow patterns
Blocking Window Light
Daylight through windows can sometimes be helpful in a scene, but many times it needs to be removed entirely. Rosco Blackout can be temporarily installed into windows to eliminate daylight and allow full lighting control.
Creating Negative Fill
Blackout can also be used to remove ambient or bounced light entering a scene. This technique is known as negative fill and helps increase contrast and shape in an image.
Because Blackout has a matte frosted finish, it absorbs light effectively and works well when mounted in gel frames, rigged on stands or taped temporarily to walls or floors.
Custom Cucoloris Effects
Rosco Blackout can easily be cut with scissors or a matte knife to create custom cucoloris (cookie) effects that cast textured shadows into a scene.
This allows filmmakers to create shadow patterns and lighting textures without needing plywood or heavy rigging materials.
Installation Tips
- Clean surfaces before taping Blackout into windows.
- Mount onto gel frames when using as a flag or negative fill panel.
- Cut shapes carefully when creating cookie patterns.
- Test placement before final rigging to ensure correct light control.
