Scenic Coatings for Foam – Choose & Apply

Choose your coat, specs and how to apply

FoamCoat for rigid foam, FlexCoat for foam that flexes. Pick the coat for the job, check the numbers, and lay it down so it lasts.

FoamCoat or FlexCoat?

Start with what the piece has to do. Most rigid foam builds start with FoamCoat.

Rosco FoamCoat
Rigid foam · hard shell

FoamCoat (7100)

Hard, impact-resistant, sandable shell for carved XPS, EPS and polystyrene.

Choose for: rocks, facades, columns, props and scenery that must stay rigid and take a beating.

Rosco FlexCoat
Flexible · moving pieces

FlexCoat (7120)

Tough but flexible skin that bends and compresses without cracking.

Choose for: soft props, costumes, touring sets and anything handled, stacked or flexed.

Bonding, priming or clear / texture effects?

That is a job for FlexBond (adhesive, sealer and primer) or CrystalGel (clear coat, primer and texture medium), not a foam hardener.

How to coat foam

The same basic workflow whichever coat you use.

Assemble & seal

Carve and glue up your piece. For gluing mixed materials or sealing very porous foam first, FlexBond is the bonder and sealer.

Stir thoroughly

The coatings carry heavy solids. Power-mix until fully uniform so the shell cures evenly and strong.

Build your coats

Brush, roll or hopper-spray. FoamCoat: 2–3 coats for a hard shell. FlexCoat: 2 (a 3rd for heavy handling). Keep coats even.

Dry & cure

Recoat within the dry window, then allow about 24 hours full cure before sanding, carving back or painting.

Sand & refine

Once cured, FoamCoat sands and carves for crisp detail. Smooth or texture to suit the look you are after.

Paint & finish

Colour with Rosco scenic paints, then seal with a clear glaze, or add CrystalGel for clear and texture effects.

How much will you need?

Pick the coat and enter your surface area. Estimates only, textured foam drinks more.

Choose a coat and enter your area to estimate how many tins you need.

Based on the 3.8 L (1 gallon) tin. For deep, heavily carved texture, plan on the lower end and round up.

FoamCoat & FlexCoat FAQ

The questions we get asked before people commit. If yours is not here, just call or email us.

FoamCoat or FlexCoat — which do I need?
If the piece stays rigid (carved rocks, facades, columns, hard props), use FoamCoat for a hard, sandable shell. If it has to bend, compress or get handled and stacked on tour (soft props, costumes, flexible foam), use FlexCoat so it moves without cracking.
Will it melt my foam?
No. Both are water-based and designed specifically for EPS, XPS and polystyrene (“pink/blue foam”). Unlike solvent-based hardeners, they will not eat into the foam.
How many coats do I need?
FoamCoat: 2–3 coats for a durable shell. FlexCoat: 2 coats is common, add a 3rd for heavy handling. More coats build more strength. Use the coverage calculator above to estimate quantity.
Can I sand and carve it?
Yes. Once FoamCoat is fully cured (about 24 hours) you can sand it smooth or carve back into it for crisp detail. FlexCoat stays flexible, so it is less suited to hard sanding.
Can I paint over it?
Yes. Once cured, both give excellent tooth for Rosco scenic paints (Off Broadway, Supersaturated) and standard water-based acrylics. Seal the finish with a clear glaze, or add CrystalGel for clear and texture effects.
How long does it take to dry and cure?
Recoat within roughly 1–8 hours depending on thickness and conditions, then allow about 24 hours full cure before sanding, carving back or painting. Let it cure fully before heavy handling.
How do I apply it?
Stir thoroughly first (the coatings carry heavy solids, power-mixing helps). Apply thin, even coats by brush, roller or hopper spray gun. Use undiluted for maximum durability, or thin lightly with water for smoother coats. Clean up with soap and water while wet.
Can I use it outdoors?
FoamCoat is water-resistant, but outdoor builds should be finished with paint or a top-coat for longer-term weather exposure. For a build that lives outside, tell us the details and we will advise on the right finishing system.
Is it flame retardant?
FoamCoat is inherently flame-retardant, which is one reason it is widely used on venue builds. It only protects the coated foam, though — the fabric, timber and other materials around your build should be treated separately. See the Rosco Flamex range for those, and always check your venue’s compliance requirements.
I need to bond, prime or add clear / texture effects
Those are different jobs. FlexBond is the adhesive, sealer and primer; CrystalGel is the clear coat, primer and texture medium. See the FlexBond & CrystalGel page.
Do you sell sample sizes of the coatings?
Not currently for FoamCoat and FlexCoat — the smallest size is 3.8 L. If you are unsure whether a coat suits your build, tell us the substrate and the piece and we will point you to the right one before you order.
